Gemfields announces the discovery of a 7,525-carat (1,505 grams) emerald, the largest in the history of the Zambian deposit and one of the largest gem quality on record in recent decades.
The mining company and this African country are currently the world’s main producers of these gems, which are exploited with a high technological component.
The company has called this gemChipembele, which means rhinoceros in the local dialect, since its shape is somewhat reminiscent of the horn of these animals. The find follows the discovery of a large gem of 5,655 carats in 2018, and another of 6,225 carats in 2010.
In 2018, another large 5655-carat gem-quality emerald was found in Zambia, called ‘The Lion’. The stone was sold along with 26 other lots with which the mining firm raised 28.4 million dollars.
Gemfields will sell the stone at its next auction and will also offer the winning bidder the option of having the stone part of the ‘Provenance Proof’ traceability program of the Swiss laboratory Gübelin, which will ensure that all cut and polished stones derived from this raw emerald remain identifiable.
