Colored gemstones are attracting the attention of diamond investors, who make about $80 billion a year. Based on the demand for rubies, sapphires and emeralds, the consulting firm Technavio predicts that the global gem market would reach US $292,000 million in 2018. This is based on Christie’s auction of a Colombian emerald, which in June 2017 was sold for a record of US $5.5 million. This is the so-called Rockefeller emerald, which belonged to the famous family and was 18.04 carats. Technavio’s bets are on companies such as Canadian Fura Gems, which took over the Coscuez mine in Boyacá.
